This project worked to portray architecture's discomfort with universality by creating a 4'x4'x4' apparatus that portrays elements of varying levels of ability. A spectrum of identities such as varying mobility, sightness, and sensorial exposure play a part in this and attempt to define a built environment that celebrates and contains all these identities. (Please note the lack of the term disability as this only serves to alienate and other those who experience life in this way)
While this project mostly marks experimentation in how one could represent these abilities in large-form installation, so much was defined to me in how we design for those with a variance of ability. In many ways, it is impossible to singularly define a way to design for all without contending with needs that often go against one another (ie differences in sound needs between sightedness and sensorial exposure). With this said, I believe by working from the micro-scale of the individual and their needs, we can begin to build a framework that better encapsulates the macro-built environment better defined for all. Please expect more on this study in the future.
